SOROKIN WINS 52nd MARCH MEET

03/08/2010: It took an extra day to do it but Adam Sorokin took the Champion Speed Shop Van Dyke Motorsports hemi-powered dragster to victory at the 2010 Bakersfield March Meet with a 5.76-second at 241 MPH run. Sorokin charged on Howard Haight's 5.93-second 246 MPH challenge, and tripped the win light for the first ever March Meet win for the South San Francisco crew. Co-crew Chief Bob McLennan was wearing a smile in the staging lanes, as the team waited to roll the car into the Winner's Circle at Famoso Raceway.

"We haven't been in the Winner's Circle for so long, our Champagne has aged", said McLennan jokingly of the win.

The triumph has been a long time coming for the team, who brought the all-new hemi-powered dragster to the March Meet with but a single test run completed only one week before the race. Once at the March Meet the car went quicker and faster with each pass.

Winning the March Meet is the realization of a dream for driver Adam Sorokin, who said he has always wanted to follow on the legendary lines of his own father Mike Sorokin, who took the 1966 March Meet win in The Surfers hemi-powered AA/Fuel dragster.

"It is almost too big of a dream to actually realize", said Sorokin fresh from the winning charge that brought his longtime dream into reality.

WEATHER WINNING MARCH MEET

03/06/10 Bakersfield, CA: After two days of qualifying the ladder leading into Sunday's eliminations was pretty much decided by the weather. For whatever reasons Top Fuel was delegated to follow the funny car qualifying both Friday and Saturday and due to severe and lenghtly oil downs in the flopper ranks, the already cold race track was "gone" by the time the dragsters got their shots.

As a result the final qualifying numbers were the worst in memory. The kings of the sport smoked, slid then back pedaled the best they could in an almost fruitless effort to navigate a 68 degree race track.

When all was said and done, Jim Murphy's Friday time (6.16) held for the #1 spot and popular underdog Mark Malde's 6.20 from today nailed down the #2 hole. Another surprise in the top half of the field is Brendan Murry in the #5 slot. The bump stop was a dismal 10.23 by Rick Rogers. Three cars were DNQ.

Sunday's forecast does not have any rain in the equation but neither is a lot of sunshine. With 5 rounds of funny car and 4 of top fuel on tap, one can only guess how this will end... or when. There is already talk of having to finish up on Monday. Either way, the upset factor in in play.

1. Jim Murphy 6.165 @ 210.97
2. Mark Malde 6.201 @ 229.18
3. Rick White 6.485 @ 233.03
4. Rick Williamson 6.619 @ 246.30
5. Brendan Murry 6.647 @ 190.19

South San Francisco, California USA - More nitromethane through the pipes is always a good thing. Just ask the Champion Speed Shop, who will field not one but two supercharged front engine top fuel dragsters for the 2010 drag racing season. The South San Francisco crew will run with an all-new Van Dyke Motorsports hemi-powered Retroliner entry in the NHRA Heritage Series points battle, and retain the Chevrolet-powered flip-top canopy Special for select vintage drag racing events. This unique situation makes driver Adam Sorokin the only man in drag racing to have a choice between a top fuel Chevy or nitro-huffing hemi to hammer down the full 1320 feet of the quarter mile.

The latest Champion Speed Shop creation features a Rodeck hemi engine between the Neil and Parks frame rails. The Guy Ruchonnet body panels wear a paint treatment that only Art Himsl himself could create. The car is ready to put the twist to the Hoosier tires, and driver Adam Sorokin is ready for twice nitromethane behind the wheel of a machine that hearkens back to the late sixties while running quicker, faster, and safer than ever before.

"This thing is really beautiful", said Sorokin of the new hemi-powered car.

The psychedelic-era Art Himsl paintwork was still curing on the panels when the team rolled up to Sacramento Raceway for testing just one Sunday before from the final round of top fuel eliminations at the 52nd running of the Bakersfield March Meet. The team and car will descend onto the legendary patch this weekend March 5th, 6th, and 7th 2010.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (March 2): February was a busy month for the Cheetah IV Nostalgia Top Fuel dragster team.

It doesn't get much calmer for the Sacramento-based group, which will open the season at the 52nd annual March Meet "the world's largest Nostalgia drag meet" Friday through Sunday at Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif.

"This is the biggest race of the season and we're amped up," driver Terry Cox said. "All the waiting and preparing in the offseason will pay off once we line those cars up on the strip."

However, the team was hard at work long before that, beginning with the Winternationals in Pomona, Calif., in the middle of February.

At the Winternationals, the first NHRA event of the season, Cheetah IV members Louie Poole and John Cox, who co-owns the team with Jim Wilson and Gerry Ninnis, crewed for Top Fuel legend Chris Karamesines. Karamesines qualified 14th and lost in the first round to six-time defending Top Fuel champion Tony Schumacher.

Fellow Cheetah IV member Tim Lohrey, who owns Tim's Hot Rods in Rio Linda, Calif., was named Builder of the Year at the Sacramento Autorama the following weekend.

Lohrey displayed 12 cars and won numerous awards at the Autorama.

And during the final week of February, on a dark dragstrip at Sacramento Raceway, an epic scene prompted the approximately two dozen invited guests to jump to their feet.

Professional mountain bike legend Randy Spangler stuck a huge line that has been on his wish list for a long time with the help of College Cyclery owner Terry Cox and his Lucas Oil sponsored Nostalgia Top Fuel dragster.

Don Hampton, a four-time EMMY-winning executive producer/director who owns DH Productions LLC, and his crew filmed the event as the closing scene for his 25th cycling film, titled "Here We Go Again". The world premier party will start at 8 p.m. on April 17th at the Blue Fin Cafe during the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, Calif.

Decline Magazine will feature an article about “Here We Go Again …” and the history of DH Productions in its May issue. Photos from the spectacle will also be included.

Since this is DH Productions 25th DVD release, the company has been releasing a teaser clip/trailer of the film each week for the 25 weeks leading up to the release date at www.dh-productions.com.

For more information on Cox and College Cyclery "Sacramento's most complete and unique bike shop" visit www.collegecyclery.biz.

Stay tuned for additional Cheetah IV team reports, including big news from 15-year-old Justyn Cox, the grandson of John and son of Terry.

Justyn, the 2009 American Sprint Car Series Northwest Region Rookie of the Year, races a Lucas Oil ASCS sprint car for Van Dyke Motorsports.

MURPHY SEEKS ELUSIVE 5th MARCH MEET WIN

For Immediate Release:

March 02, 2010: In its 51 year history only two drivers have won the prestigious March Meet four times. The first is drag racing legend Don "Big Daddy" Garlits and the other is Jim Murphy. Garlits' career is over and his four victories are etched in stone - not so with Murphy.

On March 5th - 7th Murphy and his WW2 Racing Top Fuel dragster will once again give his best to break the tie and stand alone as the only 5 time winner of the nations most notable independent drag race. Having won in 1998, 1999, 2003 and 2004 number five has eluded him and he doesn't know how many more shots he'll have.

Going into the race Murphy said, "I can honestly say I don't ever remember going into a season better prepared. We have made some significant changes in the car including a new fuel injector that allows me to see much better." Stating further, "With Tim Beebe returning as crew chief and a solid bunch of guys around him I feel as confident as ever that number five is in reach."

If you are planning to attend the March Meet held at the Auto Club Famoso Raceway be sure to stop buy Jim's pit and say hi.

High Speed Motorsports Geared up For 2010 March Meet

02/24/2010 Anaheim, CA. Even with bad weather shortening testing, the High Speed Motorsports team and their new driver, Brad Thompson, are ready to win their first March Meet. The talent runs deep in this camp as the HSMS team was the 2008 NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series Top Fuel Champions and Thompson, in his own car, was the 2007 champ.

Thompson, who was looking at having to park his car for at least part of the 2010 season, jumped at the chance to take over the seat of the potent HSMS fueler after Troy Green announced he was pursuing other ventures. Said Thompson, "Running one of these cars is more than a little expensive and I simply did not have the resources to race how I wanted. This team has the backing and equipment to repeat as champions and I'm proud to be part of it."

Crew Chief Brett Johansen is chomping at the bit to get the season under way. "We had some bumps in the road last year but we feel they are behind us now. Over the winter the car went to Dyda Race Eng. for a new body that is 18 pounds lighter than the old one. We've restocked our arsenal of parts and pretty much kept our winning team in tact. Brad is an excellent driver so we see no learning curve either way. He'll be just fine."

According to Team Manager Tom Shelar, "Bringing Brad on board not only netted us an experienced driver but also expanded our support from SilverThin Bearings, and RMS Medical to include LG Bless and ProMotive. To me that's a win win."

HSMS CEO Dale Singh: "We are very excited to have Brad on board and look forward to making a run at the 2010 championship. We have all of the puzzle pieces in place just like we did in 2008."

The 52nd March Meet will be contested at the Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield on 05/10 to 07/10. If you come out the team invites you to stop by their pit to meet Brad and pick up a cool handout. For more info visit the HSMS website.

TOP FUEL AT THE 2010 MARCH MEET IS LOOKING GOOD!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

FEBRUARY 19th, 2010: 3,000 horsepower, 100% nitro, 11,000-rpm engines (in the front - where they're supposed to be!), a full quarter mile - every run on the ragged edge, and every one of them on 12-inch wide tires! Between 20 and 26 of these evil front-engine Top Fuel dragsters will converge on the "promised land" of nostalgia drag racing, world-famous Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif., Mar. 5-7 for the 52nd running of one of drag racing's best-known, most historic events: the one, the only March Meet!

They're coming from all corners of the nation. From the East: "Mr. Boston" with Tom Steed, "Nitrodiction" with Howard Haight and Bob Bradley with Lincoln Hassel. From the West: Neil & White, the new "super team" of "Bad Brad" Thompson and '08 champions Highspeed Motorsports, 2009 Champions "Nitro Thunder," 4 time March Meet winner Jim Murphy, RB Entertainment/Champion Speed Shop team with Adam Sorokin, Brendan Murry's "Running Wild," Rick Williamson in CHS Racing, the "Birky Bunch," "Forever Young," "Cheetah V", '09 CHRR winners Tedford and McGee, Paso Posse and many other tough-as-nails teams all champing at the bit to claim Top Fuel honors at the March Meet.

There are a bunch of new cars and new personalities and a multitude of different engine combinations - 426 Hemis, 392 Hemis, big-block Chevys, and small-block Chevys. Did we mention that 44-amp mags are legal on all engine combinations this year? That's right - arc welders for everyone!

The 2010 March Meet promises to be one of the best ever for Top Fuel. Make sure you can say, "I WAS THERE!"

Hot news from the 14th floor of the Murry building

02/16/10: For the 2010 season, Murry's 28th year in a racecar, the Running Wild AA/fuel dragster team has their sights set on an above the fold top ten finish in the NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series
Final Top Fuel Points. Brendan finished 10th in 2009.

Murry will continue to fine tune his new Keith Burgan 2009 Rooman chassis which debuted at the CHRR. With only 5 runs on the car it has yet to unleash its potential.

Immediately distinctive is the new Enderle upright injector and its hand formed scoop. However what will not be apparent at first glance will be the engine. When most teams labor to get one engine to work, Murry will alternate between an ARIAS hemi Chevy and an Alan Johnson head Big block Chevrolet. Both combinations will use an EAST WEST clutch to get power to the ground.

Murry is confident they can better their best performance of 5.87 this year with the help of a new Blowershop supercharger, and hopped up fuel system thanks to Jet Car Bob Smith and Sid Waterman.

Running Wild had several crew members leave this year and they wish them the best in there racing endeavors. Replacing them will be the new 2010 crew consisting of Dave Shaffer, Frank Mcbee, David Giles, Al Robbins, Ron Davidson, JUNGLE Mike Quick and Josh Cook. Phil and Irene Scott come all the way from Australia to help. Dale Smith and Bill Strawn will be on the crew for the Midwest events. The rest of their championship team will be returning with Karen Oie and Glen Lee and Jetcar Bob Smith. Test driver Bill Dunlap will remain on retainer.

Plans include licensing 28 year old Frank McBee sometime this year. McBee has already run 6.25 in his alcohol dragster. Murry feels it is important to hand this down to the next generation of racers.

Immediate plans include testing in the last 2 weekends of February at Bakersfield and then attacking the new season head on at the 2010 March Meet.

Fourteen-time NHRA Funny Car champion John Force – the winningest driver in drag racing history – has been named Grand Marshal for the 52nd running of the March Meet, Mar. 5-7 at Auto Club Famoso Raceway in McFarland, Calif. (about 20 miles north of Bakersfield).

The 2010 March Meet is also the first race of the Hot Rod Heritage Series, the NHRA’s 9-race nostalgia racing series.

The Kern County Racing Association (KCRA) operates historic Auto Club Famoso Raceway (just north of Bakersfield, Calif.) and promotes a full schedule of races year round, including the world famous March Meet, Mar. 5-7, 2010, is the recognized Mecca of nostalgia drag racing. For more details, visit www.autoclubfamosoraceway.com.

02/03/10: If you don't think the March Meet is a big deal, think again. Add another bad hot rod making the cross country trek to compete at the premier independent event in drag racing. The Nitrodiction top fueler will be there with Howard Haight behind the wheel all the way from Albany, NY. The crew is led by Pete Jensen, Mike Cavelli and Bill Graney tuning the car owned by Jim Didio and Alan Aroneck. This brings the Top Fuel head count to over 20 cars.

02/03/10: Darrell Teford checked in to report the CHRR winning Overtime Special of Tedford & McGee is ready to do it again. Based just 40 miles from the fabled track at Famoso, the team checked out the engine (finally) after their big win and found they pinched 3 ringlands in the October final. That fixed, same bearings back in, same tune up - lets race.

02-/03/10: A sneak preview of the new body being built for the High Speed Motorsports fueler by Bruce Dyda of DRE in Gardena, CA. It will be done, painted and lettered for Brad Thompson's debut in the car at the March Meet.

01-30-10: Jim Murphy is already chomping at the bit to make another bid for an historic 5th March Meet win. Among other changes to his WW2 Racing top fuel car, Murphy traded in his controversial "Enderle Big & Ugly" fuel injector for a more period correct Enderle upright. More than cosmetic, the switch will allow better vision for Jim at 260 MPH.

With his grandson Michael in the car they fired it up yesterday getting everything ready to test before the March Meet. "Everything went quite well, I am pumped to go run it". Stated Murphy.

Jim also has a lot of nice parts for sale at:

For immediate Release

44 amp Mag is approved for an evaluation period on Nostalgia 426 engines.

AA/FD Members voted to allow an evaluation period on the use of the 44 amp Mag in the 426 Chrysler engine. The vote result was submitted to NHRA for approval and was granted this week.

A number of rumors have been circulated regarding the vote and how it was handled. The AA/FD association informed NHRA that a rule change would be voted on regarding the testing of the 44 amp mag for the 426 engine. During our discussions, NHRA was in complete support of the associations vote outcome, pro or con.

If I were to describe the involvement of NHRA regarding the AA/FD / Heritage Series rules, it would be this:
From the safety side of things, very involved.
From the performance side:
  1. If it is to make the cars run faster, very involved.
  2. If it is to create parity and fairness, they support the association's guidelines.

The mag vote has been discussed for a very long time. Hopefully, this evaluation period will provide us the information needed to make a final vote in the future.

Below is the actual language that was voted on and approved.

This rule change is for a temporary evaluation period only. The start date of the evaluation period is 3-1-2010; the ending date of the evaluation is 8-16-2010. At the end of the evaluation period, a rules committee (to be formed by AA/FD members) will evaluate the performance of the 426 cars running the MSD Pro Mag 44. The committee will gather input from the teams running the mag as well as other teams within the association. The committee will then form a recommendation for the association to vote on. The vote will be to allow or disallow the MSD Pro Mag 44 for the remainder of the 2010 season.
Thank you,

Bob McLennan

01/16/10: It's official, the "Mr Boston" AA/FD will make the cross country trip west to compete at the March Meet in Bakersfield. The Dave Tuttle California Chassis car will be coming home so to speak as Tuttle has his shop In Northern Californa. Even though they have only made a handful of passes with the car, they'll try their hand competing against the best cars in the land. Tom "Tuna" Steed will be at the wheel.

01/15/10: Guess who's coming to dinner? This is a sneak preview of the newest entry into the Nostalgia Top Fuel ranks. Larry Gotelli is building the chassis and Pete Kaiser and Pickett are doing the motor. They don't know if they will make the March Meet or not. If they do, Gotelli will be in the seat. Updates to follow.

GREEN LEAVES HSMS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

12/30/09 Anaheim, CA - High Speed Motorsports C.O.O. and Team Manager announced today that Troy Green will be leaving the team effective immediately to pursue an opportunity to drive a funny car. Green took over the driving job from Sean Bellemeur in 2007 and proceeded to win an unprecedented 4th National Hot Rod Reunion for the team... a feat he accomplished again in 2009. However, the highlight of his career thus far was winning the 2008 NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series Top Fuel Championship.

"Troy was a huge asset to our team". stated Shelar. "He was not only an excellent driver but also a great mechanic. He will be missed and we wish him nothing but the best in his new endeavor."

A new driver will be named after the first of the year. With a list of top notch shoes putting their names in the hat it won't be an easy decision.

NHRA HOT ROD HERITAGE RACING SERIES ANNOUNCES 2010 SEASON WITH ADDITION OF NEW EVENT IN BOISE, IDAHO

GLENDORA, Calif. (Dec. 8, 2009) – NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series officials announced today the 2010 NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing schedule, which includes an additional event at Firebird Raceway in Boise, Idaho.
The Napa Auto Parts Ignitor has been added to the event schedule for the 2010 season, and will be held April 30-May 2 at Firebird Raceway. The event will feature Nostalgia Nitro Top Fuel dragsters.

The event addition brings the schedule to a total of nine races for the 2010 season, which will begin with the March Meet, March 5-7 at the famed Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif.

“A fixture at the Ignitor for four decades, we’re looking forward to the event celebrating its 40th Anniversary next May with the dramatic sights and sounds of ‘Nitro,’” said Bill New, general manager, Firebird Raceway. “As the second stop for Top Fuel in the NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Series, we feel this will further enhance and elevate one of the premier events on our racing calendar.”

In addition to Boise, the series will make stops at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, Calif., The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Sacramento Raceway in Sacramento, Calif., Speedworld Dragstrip in Wittman, Ariz., and will finish the 2010 season where it all began at the California Hot Rod Reunion at historic Auto Club Famoso Raceway.

“We’re looking forward to our third year of the NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series and are grateful for the support shown from our affiliate tracks around the country,” said Steve Gibbs of the NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Series. “The series combined with the Hot Rod Reunions and the NHRA Wally Parks Motorsports Museum demonstrates NHRA’s commitment to maintaining the history of our sport.”

The NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series consists of two nitro categories: Nostalgia Top Fuel dragsters, Nostalgia Funny Cars, and two groups of additional classes. Group 1 includes Jr. Fuel, A-Fuel, AA/Gas, and 7.0 Pro, while Group 2 includes NE I, NE II, NE III, A/Gas, B/Gas, C/Gas, D/Gas and Hot Rod. Each class will run a combination of events in which they will score points toward the championship. Groups 1 and 2 will conclude their points earning events at Speedworld Dragstrip with Champion’s presentations taking place at that event. Group 1 cars will continue race at the CHRR as a non-points event for them.

The NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series was developed in 2008 to help preserve NHRA's rich history and tradition while providing racing opportunities for those enthusiasts who enjoy nostalgia drag racing competition.

Headquartered in Glendora, Calif., NHRA has 80,000 members and 140 member tracks nationwide. As the primary sanctioning body for the sport of drag racing in the United States, NHRA presents 23 national events in the U.S. featuring the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series. Two NHRA-sanctioned bracket racing series provide competition opportunities for drivers of all levels: the NHRA Summit Racing Series and the NHRA Drags: Street Legal Style presented by AAA. NHRA also offers the Jr. Drag Racing League for youth ages 8 to 17. In addition, NHRA owns and operates five racing facilities: Gainesville Raceway in Florida; Atlanta Dragway in Georgia; National Trail Raceway in Ohio; O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis; and Auto Club Raceway at Pomona in Southern California. McGee Wins 2009 CHRR
Green Runner-up
Harris 2009 Hot Rod Heritage Top Fuel Champion

Bakersfield, CA - 10-16-18, 2009: The 18th edition of the California Hot Rod Reunion is in the record books and for the Top Fuel cars it ended with a very popular win for Rick McGee who got the best of Troy Green in a close final setting low ET of the event in the process. McGee captured his first win since the 2004 CHRR title with a convincing 5.761 (career best ET - low ET of the meet) at 247.38 by beating the 2008 HRHS champ, Green who ran a game 5.91 at 252.17.

After qualifying #2 with a first career best 5.862, McGee went on beat Ed Schwartz, Adam Sorokin and Rick Williamson to earn a spot in the final. Green came out of the #5 hole to get the best of Denver Schutz, Rick Rogers and Brett Harris to meet McGee for the 6 PM showdown.

Rick White entered this final race of the season with a 56 point lead in the NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series and was an odds on favorite to not only win the championship but the event as well. With only 17 cars competing the very last thing anyone expected was the lone DNQ to be White. With only two qualifying sessions one only had to get down the track with an 8.20 or better but in the first session White got out of the groove and crossed the centerline. With one shot left Big Blue left like a rocket then smoked the tires and broke a rear end leaving White to coast to an 8.36. This left the door open for Brett Harris who was #2 in the standings. After qualifying #1 with a 5.80 Harris went just as far as he needed (2 rounds) to pass White and win the championship by nine points.

Takes commanding lead in point chase

Sacramento 09/26/09: In a nutshell: Only ten cars showed, but only nine ran because Nitro Fever will need to be front halved after hitting the wall last month at Sacramento during a match race with a jet funny car. The crew did not see the damage until they started working on it for this event.

Cheetah IV showed with the MSD mag, but Bobby (McClennan) said they had to put a Mallory in if he wanted to play; he tested with the MSD but later switched to the Mallory. Patterson decided to stay home over the late model hemi mag controversy.

1. Harris 5.70 (new track record)
2. White 5.71 (ran 262 in Q1 for track record)

Murphy over McLennan (5.83)
Sorokin over Wiliamson (5.88)

White over Murphy (new track record by White-264 mph) Sorokin over Harris (Harris went 5.69 for new track record but was DQd for clipping a cone).

White over Sorokin (White ran five 5.7s-two in Q and three in E-all between 5.71 and 5.76.

Right now it is White and Harris -- everybody else is just on the outside looking in; Chuck Neal and Jack Harris seem to be the only ones who have this deal figured out. Even Murphy admitted that it is going to be tough for him to get that extra tenth right now.

Running Wild Racing gets a new car!

Brendan Murry the parts broker from racecarparts.com recently received a new chassis from Rooman Motorsports in Brownsburg, Indiana.
The new car features all the modern tricks with the classic styling of the sixties!
It features custom paint by Brendan (the first in 20 years) with some help from a few friends at PPG and his backyard buddies.

Recent testing with the Alan Johnson cylinder head big block Chevy netted very good early and 1/2 track numbers. Team confidence is high going into the Govenor's Cup Championships at Sacramento Raceway September 17 &18.

A special thanks goes out to:
